He’s quietly helping out in the HUB on any given day, but in 1980, while most 10-year-olds were riding around the neighborhood, one of our regulars Rob B. tackled the legendary Sea to Summit Century — the 100-mile grind from Ventura’s shores to Mt. Pinos summit.
Backed by his father, the head race communications monitor, Rob pedaled through Ojai, up Hwy 33, over Pine Mountain, and into the high country. Dad coordinated support via ham radio while towing a trailer along the route, keeping riders safe and supplied in the pre-cell-phone era.
It was a true father-son adventure and a testament to grit. At an age when many were still on training wheels, Rob became part of Ventura cycling lore — proving that big rides start with big dreams (and strong family support).
The Horizon of Ventura-organized event embodied the community spirit that still defines local cycling today. Here’s to the kids (and dads) who make epic memories on two wheels!
