 Meet Alex and his Bike!

Say hello to another BV crew member and their bike: Meet Alex!  Alex brings the dirt, sweat, dancing, style and effervescent magic and joy to his community, in the best way!

Your bike, make and model: Surly, OG Krampus

Does your bike have a name? Usually I call them Barney because of the purple and green accents all over, but a friend also calls it my monster truck.

What’s your favorite feature on your bike? Probably the huge tires, I usually roll slick 29 x 2.5 tires on 50mm rims so they have a big diameter for easy roll over and a lot of volume for a cushy ride.

Your most unique feature? It’s a tie between my 80’s suntour power shifters moving a 10spd drivetrain, Dia Compe 4 finger moto levers squeezing dual piston mechanical disc brakes and Giant roll top bag I made out of cut up old military duffel bags.

When did you build your bike? I think it was the fall of 2018? I stripped a lot of cool stuff off of a ’84 Bianchi Grizzly atb I was rolling and slapped it on the surly I bought from someone in the PNW on Pink Bike.

What’s the cool story behind your bike? It’s big, heavy, and carries lots of junk. I can disappear into the mountains for a few days and roll around in the dirt, or spend all day fighting cars mashing out centuries on the road. It’s my go everything bike.

Most memorable trip/adventure this bike has been on? I toured around new mexico and arizona November 2018. I did most of a bike packing route called the New Mexico off road runner with some friends. It was nice to get away from everything and just sleep in the dirt for a couple of weeks! I think we should all do more of that. After the off road route I rambled around cruising through little towns for a bit and eventually landed in Tucson, Arizona. Ran over lots of thorns, made lots of friends!

What’s one of your favorite places to ride in town(trail, route, etc.)?    I like riding up to Meiners Oaks on the bike path and dropping into the Ventura River Preserve. It’s my favorite mix of class 1 bike path away from cars, and cutty double track. Just what I made my bike to do.

Give me three words that sum up your feelings about bikes/cycling: Sweat cures all!
