Dear Ask Away;

I’m super excited!  Got my first bike in December and want to get out and ride for recreation.  What are your top tips for newbies?  I’m a mom on a hybrid riding mostly solo.

Signed, B.

Dear B.:

Happy days are here! For sure you will find riding good for your health in keeping weight down, stress relief, and joy. With moderately wide tires, a hybrid bike can take you comfortably on paved routes as well as mild dirt or gravel. Go do errands or cruise around at the beach or get to work on this bike! So the main top tips are simple yet IMPORTANT!

  1. Wear a snug well-fitting helmet every single ride.
  2. Give yourself a few minutes and do a quick ABC check before you get on the bike every time (A) check tires for correct pressure, (B) check brakes are operating well, (C) check the chain is clean and free moving, and crank is rotating smoothly and snugly
  3. Finally do a head-to-toe check on yourself, helmet, no loose clothing, roll up loose pantlegs, tuck in shoelaces. Wear something bright and visible!  Add a blinking red light to the rear of your bike or on your clothes, as well as a white light to the front of the bike.

Follow these tips and enjoy the ride!
