Advocacy, Blog, What's Happening|

Oxnard City Council District 4 is under the helm of a vibrant new leader: Gabriela Rodriguez. Gabby is a local native and we interviewed her about raising the value of cycling in Oxnard:

BVC: How much do you think the typical resident in Oxnard is interested in cycling, for work or transportation or recreation?

GR: My own observations in my district and city wide, people are exhausted and have little time with their family, they need to rest. Residents of Oxnard desire for

  • Convenience
  •  affordability
  •  efficiency
  •  access

Bikes are just not meeting that criteria and socioeconomic plays a big role.  However, I am an advocate for biking because it could alleviate the cost of transportation.

BVC: What improvements are you prioritizing to help cyclists in Oxnard?

GR: Infrastructure is not up to date and people don’t feel safe because of the lack of bike paths/ some can be unclear or dangerous. There is little to no bike education in Oxnard.  When given the opportunity I will fight for environmental justice, access to bike culture and safety but, because I am not privy to other information I have to see what other priorities are at stake.

BVC: What role do you want cycling to play as a climate change solution, for example by kids riding instead of getting driven to school?

GR: Cycling is one of the things we can do to decrease personal the global footprint. I’ve heard from people biking to Oxnard college that it would be really cool to have bike routes, even if it gets longer to get from point A to point B on routes because of the aerobic, sustainability, affordability, and other potential benefits of biking.
