Introduction:

Bike Ventura County is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving Ventura County for over 12 years. Our mission is to foster a safe, healthy community through bicycle education, empowerment, and advocacy in Ventura County. The organization was originally founded under the name VCCOOL, to combat climate change in Ventura. In 2015, the Board of Directors and staff elected to focus on bicycle programming entirely and rename the organization BikeVentura. Through our community bike shop (Bike HUB), we offer do-it-together repair at low or no cost, and engage with underserved and low-income populations who primarily use bikes for transportation. Bike Ventura County is committed to carrying out our advocacy and program work through the lens of equity and inclusivity.


BikeVentura County’s Executive Director (ED) is responsible for ensuring programs are funded through a variety of revenue sources: grants, government contracts, individual donors and earned revenue through BikeHUB and online sales. Working with staff, they supervise and support program managers to ensure they carry out programming goals and that funding requirements are met. This is a full-time employment position (40 hours/week) that reports to the Board President and Board of Directors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstration of experienced organizational leadership 
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including grant writing and group facilitation
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills including proficiency in using technology management tools and experience working with information technology staff to develop and implement program evaluation systems
  • Background in community based projects (personal, non-profit, community service)
  • Strategic mindset with experience developing and implementing long and short-range strategic plans
  • Effective collaboration with Board of Directors or similar stakeholders within an organization
  • Knowledge of challenges facing region, especially disadvantaged and underserved communities
  • Understanding of anti-oppression, equity and inclusivity concepts

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in an appropriate field
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) speaking, writing, reading
  • Experience working with nonprofit boards
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Familiarity with Ventura County civic and community organizations 
  • Training from Society For Human Resource Management or similar.
  • Specific training in anti-oppression, equity and inclusivity concepts
  • Experience with transportation equity and/or bicycle advocacy campaigns
  • Appreciate the bicycle as a tool for change
  • Agree to participate in LCI Bicycle skill & safety training & certification

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for 4 to 8 hours at events
  • Ability to sit for 4-8 hours in an office environment
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.; ability to lift overhead 10 – 25 lbs.
  • Ability to walk while carrying 25 lbs. 
  • Occasionally stooping, no more than an hour intermittently within a shift 
  • Flexible work schedule and work from home options after onboarding

Compensation:

  • Starting salary:  $70,250. Dependent on experience and qualifications.
  • Paid time off: 5 days’ per year, 5 days personal time, 5 days of paid sick time  
  • 8 holidays per year

  • End of year performance bonus when successful fundraising goals are met or exceeded
